It is with deep sorrow that we inform all junior clubs and WBA members that Jan Dowler passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on the 30th of December.
Jan was a valued and integral part of the WBA family, having been with the Association since its beginnings in 1976. After being involved in every aspect of the association over the years, including as a player, coach, administrator and volunteer; Jan is best known by many of our current members for her work running the Junior Domestic Competition and working behind the door during competitions.
The WBA Junior Competition experienced its biggest growth in participation numbers in the history of the association under Jan's leadership. The continued success of our program at Waverley will serve as an ongoing testament to Jan's great work over many years.
At the first round of WBA Junior Domestic Competition following the break, we will be observing one minute silence during each shift of competition, below are the times that we will be observing one minute silence:
Saturday January 31
11:00am; 5:00pm
Sunday February 1
5:15pm
Tuesday February 3
6:30pm
Some Junior Domestic Clubs or teams may choose to wear black arm bands at their games on this day.
Jan was also instrumental in the establishment of the Junior Falcons program, which from humble beginnings has grown to provide representative Basketball opportunities to over 300 junior players.
Every Junior Falcons team will be wearing black arm bands throughout the Eltham-Dandenong tournament as a mark of respect for Jan's contribution to the Falcons program.
Furthermore, the Falcons Big V program and the Waverlery Referee's Association are also paying tribute to Jan's contribution to Waverley. The Big V player of the Year award will be named in Jan's honour, while all Waverley Referees are wearing black arm bands to start the year.
