The Championship Men’s unbeaten start finally comes to an end, while the Championship Women continue their dominant run. The Youth Men grab a win down the highway and the Youth Women split their weekend. Round Six was action packed as Big V Basketball returned from Easter with a bang.
In a matchup of two teams forecast to be doing work deep into August this year, the Champ Men headed to the new home court of the Bulleen Boomers at East Doncaster Secondary. It is a tremendous venue and the product on the floor certainly did it justice. The two teams exchanged blows throughout, before the Falcons came through with the goods in the fourth to record a nail biting five point win. Massive performances from Brad Kelleher and Ivan Platenik were the backbone of an impressive win.
After the bruising encounter on Saturday Night, the Falcons had to back up the next day against the reigning champions and other undefeated team, Corio Bay. The Stingrays had a bit too much venom for the Falcons in this one, establishing an early lead and seeing off a second half run to inflict the Falcons’ first loss and remain the last of the unbeatens in SCM. It was a great run of wins to start the season for the Falcons and they’ll now get back to work to register more Ws and stay ahead of the chasing group.
It was more of the same for the Championship Women in their first half against the Sherbrooke Suns, as the Falcons raced to an early lead. The second half was a much more even contest however the Falcons had done enough by that stage and finished with a 30 point victory. The two big guns in Cunningham and Ardossi led a balanced Falcons attack, to wrap up a very successful April for the Falcons.
The Youth Men have shown glimpses of what they are capable of this season, but consistency has been an issue. Travelling down the highway for an appointment with Geelong, the Falcons put in a very solid effort to record a well-earned win. With the normally dominant Matthew McCarthy held reasonably quiet, it was a better all-around team effort which got them over the line, at Geelong, which is traditionally a pretty tough place to win.
Sitting just outside the top four, the Youth Women faced a massive task with a two-game weekend that could put them in the four, or see them drop right off the pace. As it turned out, they split the weekend and kind of stayed where they were just outside the top four. Saturday Night at Kilsyth wasn’t a great night for the girls, after a competitive first half the struggled to keep up offensively after the interval in a game which was few in highlights. Rather than stew on their struggles the night before, the Falcons came out with renewed energy on their home floor against Eltham on Sunday. The scoring picked up, and everything else fell into place for the Falcons to record an important 10 point win and stay just a stone’s throw from the top four.
Next weekend the Champ teams host an exciting home double header on Sunday, which will also be forecast live on FalconsTV. The Youth teams head countryside for an away double header at Ballarat, hopefully they can uncover some gold.
