The Falcons race to the Easter break on the back of a successful weekend. The Champ Men continue to roll, the Youth Men split once again, while the Women’s teams soar over the Eagles. Oh, and Brad Bridgewater nearly rips the ring down…twice.
The Falcons headed to Greensborough on Saturday Night for an away women’s Double Header. The Falcons Youth Women must have thought it was a supper, because they brought plenty of turnovers. Despite handing the ball over 42 times, the generous Falcons still managed to grab a tough away win, courtesy of a better shooting percentage and an otherworldly 60-19 advantage on the boards. Mikaela Miller led all scorers with 14 while Maria Nomikoudis was determined to fill up every statistical category with eight points, nine rebounds, six assists and 11 turnovers in a near quadruple-double. The win puts the Falcons in striking distance of the top four after the first five rounds.
The Champ Women established a nice early lead, and put the game away during a dominant third quarter. Cunningham, Ardossi, Higgs and Smith led a very balanced attack in the 90-57 win. A quirky stat: nine Falcons players went to the charity stripe in this one, Ardossi shot three foul shots, and the other eight all shot two each, talk about sharing it around. The Falcons women have now won four in a row and are gaining some serious momentum, which should make for some exciting games when we return from Easter.
The Youth Men had yet another double header weekend playing at Sandringham on Saturday Night before returning to the Falcon Nest on Sunday to square off against undefeated Kilsyth. It was a tough ask without one of the Big Ms in Emmanual Marlou, but the other half, Matt McCarthy got right to work, and was ably supported by Nathan Guscott’s outside shooting as the Falcons ran out winners on Saturday Night. It was a difficult task to back up on Sunday against the ladder leaders but the Falcons put in a valiant effort, eventually falling away in the second half after a competitive opening. The Falcons have got some wins under the belt now, and will hope to go on a bit of a run after the break, as some of the college kids start to return.
Putting an exclamation mark on the weekend, the Champ Men welcomed McKinnon to the Nest for the first time in men’s competition. Although in their first season of SCM competition, the Cougars boast NBL legend Marcus Timmons and Canadian National Team member Kale Harrison. The Falcons showed their superior depth in this one, led by the ever-efficient Ivan Platenik and the on-fire Tom Boyle. The highlights of the game were two vicious slams by Falcons Big Man Brad Bridgwater, one of them off a pin point pass from silky smooth point guard Adrian Campbell, which had the crowd in raptures (check out the Falcons TV footage of the two phi-slamma-jammas here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlSCt5N5Qo8).
Happy Easter Big V fans! Look forward to seeing you all back on ANZAC Day weekend.
