The State Championship Women win big again, the Youth teams both split their weekends and the State Championship Men remain undefeated...just. Round four is in the books, let's take a look at who did what in a busy weekend of Falcons Big Basketball.
Saturday Night saw the very rare occurance of all four Falcons teams playing at four different places. Needless to say it would have been difficult to get around to watch everyone play. The only team to play at home this week was the Youth Women, who welcomed the Ballarat Rush. It was a scrappy game, with neither team really making an impression with their shooting percentages. The Falcons fell short in the end by 12 points, but it was not through a lack of discipline defensively, at three quarter time the Falcons had been whistled for just two fouls for the game, and in the end finished with just five, which must be knocking on the door of some sort of record. The Falcons were led by Mikaela Miller and Zali Rayment, who both reached double figures.
Slightly earlier in the night, in a much quieter part of town where there is definately a river, the State Championship Women headed to Warrandyte to face the Venom. It wasn't an overly close encounter on this occasion, the Falcons got off to an early lead and extended it at each break to finish up 86-43 victors. In an everyone-played-double-figure-minutes effort, the every reliable duo of Cunningham and Ardossi led the way, with Sally Laing also finding some touch with three triples.
In the northern regions, the Youth Men faced last year's Grand Finalists Diamond Valley. In what has been a tough season so far for the Falcons boys, this one was definately among the early highlights. The Falcons recorded a gutsy four point win at a venue where winning is hard to do. The 'Big Ms' McCarthy and Marlou both had strong double doubles and Lachlan Anthony also chipped in with some buckets. The Falcons held on for the win on the back of 31 last quarter points.
Even further north, the State Championship Men did something for the first time: they played Whitllesea in a SCM game. Anyone who expected the undefeated Falcons to do this one easily was quickly put in thier place as the Pacers pushed the Falcons for four quarters. It was in fact a last second shot form Brad Kelleher, who topped the 30 point mark for the first time this season, which got the Falcons over the line and maintained their unbeated start. Ivan had a double-double and big red Tommy Boyle dropped six threes, not bad for a centre.
Sunday afternoon saw both our youth teams butter up for a second go around, which you can do when you are that age (don't even need ice baths or anything). The Youth Women went to MSAC and paid $3 for parking. The investment proved worth it as the Falcons got back to 3-3 with a good win. It was a performance which was punctuated by the sister act of Claire and Sam Landby. Claire led the way with 22 points, while Sam had 20 of her own. Point Guard Maria Nomikoudis led the rebound count with 13.
The final game of the weekend was the Youth Men taking on Bulleen. The Big Ms were both saddled with foul trouble, but Marlou still had 21 points and a decisive six blocks. In a game where both teams turned it over a lot and missed heaps of free throws, the Boomers did enough to hold off the Falcons. The Youth Men are constently in games, but will be hoping to turn these good efforts into more Ws as the season rolls on.
There is one more weekend before the Easter break, and the Men's teams are at home for a double header on Sunday, while the Women play an away double header on Sunday at Diamond Valley.
