Falcon Wrap - Big V Round 2

It was a good weekend for the Falcons Big V Championship teams, while the Youth teams found the going a little tougher.

The Youth Men headed to Nunawading on Saturday Night to face the Spectres and came away a little spooked. Macca was exceptional again but the Falcons fell short in the first of two games for them on the weekend. Sunday afternoon saw the boys return to the Falcon Nest to face the Melbourne Tigers, who have played finals pretty much every year since they came into the competition. That sort of record was not suprising as the Tigers ran out to a strong early lead, but the Falcons worked their way back into the game, which was very impressive given they were playing their second game for the weekend.

In the final washup the Falcons were once again found wanting, this time by an agonisingly small two point margin, on the back of a double header, to a perennial finals team. Proof that despite their 0-4 record, they are playing some high quality ball, and that first win cannot be too far away.

A rare Saturday Doube Header at the Falcon Nest started with the Youth Women welcoming last year's runner-up Dandenong. The Rangers won something like their first 15 games last season and were coming off two wins the previous weekend. This was another game where the first quarter did not give too much confidence to the Falcons, falling behind by double figures. The second and third quarters wwre far more impressive, with some offensive punch provided by Zali Rayment and Mikaela Miller. The Rangers put the foot on the pedal early in the fourth to put the game away, but the Falcons efforts through the middle part of the game  were encouraging and gave them something to work from.

The much anticipated WNBL matchup of Cunningham/Ardossi vs Munro didn't come to pass in the Championship Women game as Eltham superstar Munro was ruled out with injury. The vibe around the nest was that it would take much of the competitiveness out of the game, but the Wildcats wouldn't have any of it, racing to a quarter time lead and forcing the Falcons into foul trouble in the second. The Wildcats shot a what-must-be-close-to-a-record 37 free throws in the first half, and held the Falcons at bay right through the third quarter. When the situation looked its most dire, Falcons Captain Bridgitte Ardossi shone, knocking down shots, taking charges and setting up her teammates. The game was in the balance in the last few minutes and partner in crime Tegan Cunningham made some nice inside moves to tip it the Falcons way.

The Championship Men looked to extend their unbeated start to the season against the Tigers and actually led 5-0 after 13 seconds. It didn't quite continue at that pace, but the balanced Falcons attack was on song in this one, getting up reasonably comfortably. Platenik, Kelleher, Bridgewater, Arkell all acored the ball well, and Sedale Threatt Jr was distributing it well. The Falcons juniors got into it, with a half court shot made for a free ball, and the Falcon Mascot was up and about as well, as you'll see in the photos. It's been an impressive start for the Championship Men, who stand atop the ladder, although we are only two rounds in.

The Youth Women are at home this week on Saturday Night at 8:15pm, while their is an exciting Championship Double at home on Sunday, Women at 12:30pm against Melbourne, and Men at 2:30pm against Eltham.
