Waverley Falcons State Championship Men started their 2014 Big V campaign with a flying start against an import filled Sherbrooke Sun's outfit.
With a fairly tight 18-2, the first quarter looked like the game was going to go down to the wire. Come the second quarter the level of play started to pick up with Sedale taking over spoon feeding to Ivan with some amazing dimes.
With the target of 50 points for the half not reached falling short by 6, coach Sherwell was hot on the teams tail to put the hammer down in the second half and bring this one home.
In the 3rd stint we had outstanding penetration from Brad Kelleher with a solid 16 points for the game and was the key in the 3rd being able to get to the free throw line shooting 4/5 at 80%. Brad had the best free throw performance for the team, with the team only having 22/48 from the line for the night. The boys all worked exceptionally in the 3rd and took out the quarter 30 to 14. This put us in very good stead to have a strong 4th and close out the game.
Early in the 4th it was clear that it was going to be a fouling contest and in turn this is where our poor free throw count had hurt us most. However, it gave a big opportunity to a lot of the players to get into the game. With solid minutes from the big man Brad Bridgewater playing a total of 21 minutes, a very impressive 7/8 from the field and a MONSTER dunk was outstanding. This effort gave coach Sherwell the opportunity to rest the veteran's body for the remainder of the game. It gave a chance for coach to get some of the bench bunnies with the likes of Ali Granger taking to the floor for his State Championship debut with a solid 8 minutes, a field goal that just rimmed out and with a very poor free throw performance making only 1 of 4 being his career worst performance to date.
For the first game of the season everyone seamed to be in high sprits for the coming Big V season. The men's side comes home for the next game against a young Melbourne Tigers side at 2.30pm on Sunday the 23rd of March at the Waverley Basketball Centre.
Stay classy Falcons!
