Falcons Men win Extraordinary Shootout

In their key matchup on Saturday Night, which has been touted by some as a potential first round finals preview, the Falcons State Championship Men scored an upset win over the Bulleen Boomers at Templestowe Leisure Centre.

While the win itself was impress and noteworthy, some of the sheer numbers from the game, from both sides, speak to what an amazing encounter it was.

The first stat that really jumps out is the Falcons' first half shooting display, which saw them go a simply ridiculous 13-15 from the three point line. Big Tom Boyle was enjoying his, rattling off a perfect 6-6 from beyond the arc before the break, while Chris Arkell was also in on the action with four of his own.

The Falcons also took care of the ball, committing just two turnovers for the half. But for all the Falcons good work, and here is the really amazing bit, they were ahead by just two points at the break. Bulleen were every bit as impressive, putting up better than 50% from the three point line themselves and also winning the rebound count (what few rebounds there were to be had).

Things slowed down for both teams a little bit in the second half, but not enough to stop both teams from obliterating the century mark, and combine for 76/152 (a mathematically sound 50%) shooting from the field, and a whopping 28 makes from the three point line.

It is safe to assume the fans went home impressed with the level of talent on display, and excited at the prospect that this might a finals preview.

Also of note on the weekend was the performance of SCW Centre Bridgitte Ardossi, who tallied 32 points and 10 rebounds (making an impressive 18/22 from the foul line), and the VYC Men, who managed to grab an away win despite missing some key players.

With just three rounds remaining in the Big V Regular season, three Falcons teams are still in the thick of finals contention, with the SCM, VYCM and SCW all in the mix. The State Championship Men play at home this Sunday against Sherbrooke at 2pm.
