SECOND ELIMINATION FINAL
Waverley Falcons 103 dft Hume City Broncos 84
HUME City arrived at the Waverley Basketball Centre with elimination at the forefront of the mind – and Waverley was ready and waiting.
It was the Falcons who controlled the tempo of the game from the jump and the Falcons who earned themselves the chance to keep their season alive for another week.
After posting a seven-point lead at the first change, Waverly continued with the pulse, taking an eventual 18-point victory.
A collective team effort from the home side ensured they got over the line, with their attack spearheaded by Ivan Platenik who managed a joint-game-high 26 points and an additional 11 boards.
Platenik was supported well by Brad Hill, who fared well to collect 21 points and 11 boards as well as giving away five dimes.
James Anderson (14 points, 10 boards) and Simon Blennerhassett (13 points) also produced solid games for the Falcons.
For Hume City, it was Pierre Jallow who was most lethal, hitting a joint-game-high 26 points and crashing the board with 17 rebounds. Michael Petridis and Greg Smith also contributed well, stepping up to produce 16 points apiece.
Perhaps the key to this game was Waverley’s ability to keep Hume City star Mike Spears to just six points, although the key figure still had a presence under the ring to pull-in 10 rebounds.
The Falcons look to next week where they tackle the strong Melbourne campaigners for their chance to vie for the 2008 title.
