Finals action for Falcons Teams

This Friday is a massive one for the Junior Falcons, with many teams involved in big time finals games.

Let's take a quick look at some of the games on August 31, and the teams who will be playing for everything.

GIRLS:

12.1 VC Reserve - Coach: Trevor De Jong

The first Under 12 Girls team to make VC has made finals in the reserve section, where they take on the Cobras, who they had a nailbiting loss to last time they played. Can this team continue to make history?

12.2  VJL2 -  Coach: Claire Landby

The team has seemingly come out of nowhere to be a factor late in the season, but after a season of hard work the girls are through to week two of the finals, and face a Nunawading team who they have had mixed results against this season. A win here would put them just one win out from the Grand Final.

14.1 VJL1 - Coach: Elias Palioyiannis

An offensive juggernaut, this team had some early losses but have piled on the wins later in the season to cement first place, with a points total above and beyond other Under 14 teams. If they can fire at the offensive end, get their running game going and get stops when needed, it is hard to see this team losing. Injuries have been a factor, but when the big guns fire, look out.

14.3 East 1 - Coach: Brendon Gordon

After a heartbreaking loss last week where missed free throws hurt dearly, the girls will look to bounce back against Nunawading and keep their season alive. The entirely bottom age team have performed well this year, and have been amongst the top teams all the way through, the pressure of finals Basketball will be a great experience for them.

14.4 East 3 - Coach: George Delgiannis

Get wins. That is what this team has done this year and now they are just one win away from the big dance. After a close three point win last week, the girls take on Kilsyth in a top notch finals encounter. Another bottom age team and another good year from the girls who have a knack for winning the close ones.

16.1 VJL3 - Coach: Mark Sainsbery

A team that has not tasted defeat for 11 rounds would have to fancy their chances, however sport is never that simple. The girls have had an interrupted lead in to finals, but have the talent and the heart to get the job done when it matters most. Undermanned and underrated, they will need to show bravery to make the dance, but they just might have enough ticker to do it.

18.1 VC - Coach: Elias Palioyiannis

The team that has never ceased to amaze will hope to have one more trick in the bag. After qualifying for VC pre-Christmas, making the Classic and then finals in the top section, it has been an astounding season. The Spectres present a tough challenge, however the season series is tied 1-1 and it is finals Basketball. Anything can happen.

BOYS

14.2 East 1 - Coach: Jason Minerve

The bottom age group has come along way this year, and after another soid win last week now play Oakleigh for a chance to make the big dance a week early. This team has a bit of everything, size, speed and a great ability to finish at the offensive end. The bigs are quick, and if they get out and run it will a long way to upsetting the Warriors and grabbing their Grand Final spot.

14.5 East 5 - Coach: Stephen Galgani

A fantastic effort from a team mostly made up for first year players. With a win against Pakenham tonight, they will be in a Grand Final, which would cap off a season which has already seen tournament success. They have quick guards and the big man in the middle, so if they execute their game plan, they have the tools to get the win.

16.1 VJL 1 - Coach: Karl Kaldawi

It has been hard work for the boys this season, but all that hard work has paid off in the form of a finals berth, and making it through to week 2 of the post season is a great effort. They will take on Nunawading, coached by former Waverley coaching director Mike Slusher. A win here and a push further into finals is certainly a possibilty for this athletic group.

16.4 East 4 - Coach: Adam Sickinski

After a sensationally high scoring win against Ringwood last week, the boys take on Keysborough who had a very high scoring game themselves. No doubt these teams can put the ball in the hoop, but who can get things done at the defensive end may be the team which gets the win here and staves on elimination.

16.5 East 3 - Coach: Chris Reed

Despite a disappointing loss last week, the Falcons have worked hard to earn the double chance in finals and that is what they get this week. Their opponents, Frankston, won by just a point so expect nothing less than a fierce encounter here and quite possibly another close finish. A win here, and a shot at the Grand Final, will be plenty of motivation.

16.6 East 4 - Coach: Bill Rowland

The boys were sensational last week in a rip roaring win of Melbourne. It was a high scoring, high intesity affair. Souther Peninsular did not enjoy the same comfort as they struggled to score freely in their loss. It could be a bruising encounter, the Falcons will want to run, and controlling the tempo of the game may be the key to victory.

18.1 VC - Coach: Eric Minerve

It has been a tough second half of the season for the Falcons as injuries and unavailability have begun to take their toll. Finals though is the time to step up and against traditional rivals Knox, the Falcons will be keen as anything to grab the win. The top end of VC is as good as it gets in junior hoops, and any finals win is a great achievement.

18.4 Regional 3 - Coach: Brian Pollard

A great win last week sets the boys up for a chance at making the Grand Final. Although Mornington are the higher placed team, any mob that can get it done in finals by double figures has to be considered a good chance. It should be a cracking game, both teams love to run and it will be as entertaining as it is intense.

18.5 Regional 2 - Coach: Stephen Savory

It will be a tough ask for Waverley's fifth team to get the job done against Chelsea'a first team, but they have shown all season they are up for the challenge and will relish another test tonight. This is a team with some good size and a great work ethic, their hussle has won them games and that is what finals is all about.
