After a whacky weekend of Hoops, the Falcons Big V Finals campaign has ended for both the Championship Men and the Youth Men.
The Senior Men faced the tough ask of knocking of Eltham twice on their home floor in as many days. The do-or-die scenario looked to be right down the Falcons ally on Saturday Night as they put on a shooting clinic. It may have been the presence of long range shooting guru Elias Palioyiannis on the bench, but something had the Falcons' radar on target, especially Brad Kelleher. The Nuggety guard had a jawdropping 30 points, his most since dropping 48 on Latrobe City five years ago. The haul inlcuding 8 three pointers, one of them with a foul leading to an exceptionally rare four point play. The rest of the Falcons followed in kind, Dillon, Platenik, Blennerhassett and Threatt all doing their thing. It was a dominant performance from the Falcons who, against the odds, found a way to reverse the momentum of the series and give themselves a shot at a Grand Final berth the next day.
The next day did not go so well however for the Falcons, the hot shooting that got them going the night before had eluded them. Despite taking an early lead, it was tough work at the offensive end for the Falcons and the Wildcats gradually built a lead which would be too large for the Falcons to reel in. Daniel Dillon tried to lift the Falcons but it was not to be their day, the Wildcats recording the win and booking a spot in the Big Dance. Despite falling short of the Grand Final, it was still a successful season for the Falcons, who battled their way into finals and nearly stole the series.
The Youth Men had the toughest ask of anyone this weekend, travelling to Diamond Valley to face the Eagles who have not looked like losing all season. The Falcons started strong but the faced paced Eagles gradually worked their way ahead and ran away with the win. The Falcons have had to work hard since losing key players to injury and college committments in the USA, however they were able to stick with the red hot Eagles through the early stages. Michael Dow, Declan Harrick and Kuany Kuany all had strong performances, but the Eagles were ferocious in their full court pressure and will carry thier form through to the Grand Final, where they will start favourites. The Falcons, although also falling just short of Grand Final action, were again a strong unit this year, with some developing senior and College players and some budding stars such as talented guard Kuany Kuany, who had a dazzling second half of the season.
It is now offseason for the Falcons Big V teams, who will enjoy a well earned break before getting into preseason later this year.
