The Senior Men figured they would get a little extra finals practice on Saturday Night, buying an extra five minutes court time in their overtime win over the Melbourne Tigers. Daniel Dillon showed he was ready for finals action with a season best 27 point, 13 rebound performance. Ivan Platenik was his usual productive self with 26 and nine while Bennie Lewis filled it up with 19. The Falcons broke the 100 point mark, and took just nine threes along the way, showing their strengths are the transition game and their inside looks. The fun stuff really begins this week for the Falcons who take on the Eltham Wildcats in the first game of their best of three series at Waverley on Sunday.
The Youth Men were also impressive, although they ultimately fell short against a tough Melbourne Tigers outfit. Kuany Kuany was again in the thick of it, accumulating 18 points and 16 rebounds. Michael Dow and Sean Stewart kept the scorers busy with 22 points and 19 points respectively, as the Falcons pushed the second on the table Tigers to a five point game. The Falcons head to Maroondah on Sunday for a finals clash with the Ringwood Hawks, the two teams have had some close games already this season. In a few short weeks some of the talented Falcons Juniors will be heading to College in the USA, they will be hoping to finish off with some wins here before they go.
The Championship Women welcomed the Ringwood Hawks on Sunday hoping to finish their season the way they started it, by defeating the Hawks. Well, they did, and convincingly it turns out. Caitlin Hindle had her best game of the season, shooting the lights out in the first half, while the contributions continued down the list. Tahlia Higgs finished off her strong end of season form with a massive double-double as well. The massive 36 point win over finals bound Ringwood a clear justification of the Falcons ambitious moves this year, and a sign of things to come for this young group.
The Youth Women will also not be taking part in finals Basketball this season, but hoped to do some damage to top placed Melbourne on Sunday in their 2012 finale. It turns out the Tigers are the top team for a reason as they grabbed a 44 point win over the Falcons. It was a fairly thin Falcons team on the floor with most players either committed with the senior team or out with injury, even still, there were some encouraging performances from Daniella Pisano and Zali Rayment. It has been a rollercoaster season for the Falcons girls, most of them in their first season, but they will be better for the experience and will no doubt become a force once again at the Youth level in the coming seasons.
Finals action starts this weekend for our two Men’s teams, with the Senior Men at home against Eltham on Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm while the Youth Men travel to Ringwood on Sunday to face the Hawks.
