Waverley Basketball will be welcoming 16 students from the Kalkaringi School in the Northern Territory for a special Basketball clinic with Falcons Senior and Junior coaches in early August.
The Kalkaringi School is located in a remote Aboriginal community 460 kilometres South West of Katherine, servicing both the Kalkaringi and Dugaragu communities, which are eight kilometres apart.
Dugaragu is famous in Australian History as the site of the successful land rights claim in 1975, after the famous Gurindji Walk Off by workers in Wave Hill Station who went on strike over wages.
Melanie Norton, a year 3 and 4 teacher at the school, said the trip was a reward for student who had displayed good behaviour and attendance. “The students that will be coming on the trip have never left the Northern Territory and have hardly ever been further than Katherine.”
“(The students) often have a difficult home life and they are responsible for getting themselves up and getting to school on time.”
The trip will be important for the students, as the school hopes it will show them the opportunities available to them, and allow them to experience the world outside of Kalkaringi.
Waverley Basketball is committed to assisting indigenous communities, most recently donating a set of uniforms to the Yiyili community in Western Australia.
