What a difference a week, and a few subs, can make.
The Youth Men certainly found that to be the case this weekend, after two disappointing losses last week, one a dousing from top of the table Diamond Valley and the other a shock loss to lowly Werribee, the Falcons took out some frustration on the Bulleen Boomers this week. Despite the Boomers being ahead at quarter time, the Falcons unleashed a 34-4 second quarter, which started a demolition job that did not stop until the Falcons had a 114-57 win. Kuany Kuany was at the forefront of the onslaught, finishing with 30 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. The Falcons went perilously close to registering every player in the double figures club, the only two players not in double figures both scored nine. After a tough weekend last round, the Falcons are once again looking like the top four threat that they are.
The Championship Men did not quite put Bulleen to the sword in the same fashion in the second game of the night; however they did do a job on them. Ivan Platenik was at his best, dominating the Boomers’ defence for a season high 38 points. Daniel Dillon flirted with a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. With the Hume City loss the Falcons are now locked in the top four and will be eyeing a chance to move up to third and avoid the top placed Ringwood Hawks in the first round of finals.
The Women’s teams took on the Boomers on Sunday, with the Youth Women at the Falcon Nest and the Championship women at Templestowe. Despite losing to the Boomers twice this season, the Falcons only ever needed two things to get a win here: a real belief in themselves, and Melissa Moyle. Only they could tell you if they had the former, but you’d better believe they had the latter. Moyle was on a mission; dropping 32 points on an extraordinary 14/20 shooting clip and came up with big plays down the stretch. The Women now have a chance to sneak out of the cellar before season’s end, which would be just reward for a season of hard work against the odds.
The Youth Women had split the season series with Bulleen heading into Sunday’s game, however they were fairly light on with the Championship Women engaged elsewhere. Point Guard Daniella Pisano led the charge in this contest, and despite falling behind at stages during the game, the Falcons did enough to stay within striking distance, the Boomers however held on in the fourth quarter. The Falcons will be encouraged by the competitive performance and will be keen to register a few more wins before the season finishes.
The Men are at home this week in a Double Header with the Broncos, while the Women are also in a double header with the Broncos at Broadmeadows. With only two rounds remaining before finals this is the perfect time to get out and catch some high quality Big V action.
