It might not have been pretty, but Saturday Night’s win at Diamond Valley may have been enough to wrap up a finals birth for the Falcons State Championship Men.
The two point victory puts a game between the Falcons in fourth and the Hume City Broncos in fifth, and with a couple more wins to finish the regular season, the Falcons could yet climb to third before finals time. Ivan Platenik, Daniel Dillon and Bennie Lewis led the charge on Saturday Night, with some good contributions off the bench to help stay in touch with the Eagles before getting past them in the final few minutes.
The Youth Men did not enjoy such a successful weekend, with limited numbers, they travelled to Diamond Valley to take on the undefeated Eagles and found out pretty quickly why they are undefeated. Declan Harrick with the premier player in the paint, with another strong double-double to show why he is college bound, however there wasn’t too much assistance as the Eagles cruised to an easy win. The Falcons then had to front up to the Falcons Nest on Sunday again shorthanded to face the Werribee Devils. Despite only having six players and struggling mightily from the field, the Falcons stayed right in the game to the end. The Devils just had a bit more energy in the final equation, the Falcons copping two tough losses but still firmly entrenched in the finals race.
The Falcon Nest on Saturday Night was the scene of a Women’s Double Header between the Falcons and the Eagles. The Youth Women got it started and despite the Eagles hanging a few spots higher on the table than the Falcons, it was an intriguing matchup given the Falcons’ recent form. True to its billing, it was a tight contest throughout. Senior players Tahlia Higgs and Evangelia Nikolitsis gave the Falcons good production but they fell just short in the end. The loss does not put an end to the Falcons’ finals hopes, but does make it quite difficult.
The Championship Women hoped to reverse the comprehensive win the Eagles had on them last time, and hung tough for most of the match. It was again tough without a legitimate big in the paint, however Melissa Moyle, Claire Landby and Caitlin Hindle all hot shots to keep the Falcons in the contest. The Eagles were able to claim a slender victory however the result shows a full strength Falcons team is more than good enough to compete in this league.
This week the Falcons’ Women’s teams take on the Bulleen Boomers, the Youth Team at home and the Championship Team away, while the Men are also away to the Boomers on Saturday Night.
