Falcons BigV Round 14

It was a tough weekend for the Falcons Big V teams, however the good news is that three of the four teams remain in the finals race with just four rounds remaining.

The State Championship Women faced a massive test when the travelled to Bentleigh to take on the McKinnon Cougars, who are sitting pretty in second position. To make matters worse for the Falcons, they were without their starting Centre, starting Power Forward, backup Centre, backup Power Forward and backup Point Guard. Forward Tahlia Higgs stepped into the Centre position and battled hard, while Melissa Moyle continued her good form despite struggling with sickness most of the week. The Falcons hung tough for three quarters but were overpowered in the fourth, going down by 23 points. Despite an unflattering margin it was a solid performance from a young, very undermanned group.
The Youth Men opened a Sunday Double Header at home and put on an entertaining show against the Eltham Wildcats. With both teams battling for finals spots it was a fierce battle form start to finish. The Falcons led by two points coming into the final quarter however the Wildcats were able to sneak the win. Michael Dow showed he is returning to full fitness with 22 points, while Kuany Kuany was again solid with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Falcons are still very close to cementing a spot in the top four, and with it a chance at a home final.
The Championship Men wrapped up the afternoon double with an intriguing matchup with league newcomers Corio Bay, with a solid line up headlined by MVP favourite Eric Williams, the Stingrays have been impressive in their Big V debut year. This one was a scrap for the Falcons, who struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Star forward Ivan Platenik was again the high scorer for the Falcons, while Brad Kelleher was effective in his minutes, however the Stingrays had too much on the day. Despite the loss the Falcons have the head to head on the Stingrays for the season 2-1, which could come in handy come finals time.
Next weekend is a busy one at the Falcons Nest, with the Women engaging in a Saturday Night Double Header against the Diamond Valley Eagles. The Youth Men have a tough weekend playing away before the Champ Men on Saturday Night at Diamond Valley, and hosting the Werribee Devils on Sunday.
