Surely they couldn’t.
Could they?
One win from the first eight games and an average losing margin of 22 points doesn’t usually signify a playoff bound team, but the Waverley Youth Women may be on the way to doing just that. Three wins in a row including a nail biter on Saturday Night has the girls up to sixth on the table with a freight train of momentum. With the likes of Tahlia Higgs and Evangelia Nikolitsis returning to full strength after injury, the Falcons have the firepower to match any team in the league. The pair had 20 and 13 points respectively on Saturday Night as the Falcons snuck out with a two point win.
A number of the Youth Women fronted up once again at the Falcon Nest on Sunday to take on the Boomers in the Championship Women game. It was a neck and neck contest throughout, however when the game was there to be won, Bulleen import D’Lesha Lloyd turned all the lights on with a game high 27 points. For the Falcons, Melissa Moyle was on fire at the start, while Claire Landby put together a solid game, and Tahlia Higgs had her second double figure game in as many days.
The Championship Men had a mixed weekend, going down to the Hawks at Ringwood on Saturday Night before bouncing back to storm the Bulleen Boomers on Sunday. Ivan Platenik was a star as usual in both games, while Daniel Dillon showed his class. In the win on Sunday, Sedale Threatt Jnr wowed the crowd with his superior floor game. The Falcons are still without big man Tom Boyle and birthday boy Kevin Benn, however they should both be back soon as the Falcons look to solidify their spot within the four.
The Youth Men had a tough time of it on Saturday Night going down to a strong Hawthorn Magic outfit. US College recruit Declan Harrick was strong in the paint for 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Kuany Kuany and Sean Stewart were also effective with the ball. The Falcons still retain their place in the top four, and will hope to grab some victories in the coming weeks to cement a spot in finals, and possibly snare a home court advantage.
The Men are at home this Sunday, with the Youth Men taking on Eltham at 12:30pm followed by the Championship Men welcoming the Corio Bay Stingrays for the first time at 2:30pm. The Championship Women take on McKinnon at Bentleigh on Saturday Night while the Youth Women enjoy a week off before they make their big run towards finals.
