It’s over.
It took a trip to the Valley of the Suns for the Falcons to finally rise, but it was well worth the wait as the Falcons women snapped their 12 game losing streak with a heart stopping three point win over Sherbrooke.
After a tumultuous week the Falcons were full of energy early in the game. It was clearly a contest between the speed of the Falcons and the veteran savvy of the Suns. With the lead bouncing back and forth, the Falcons were 5 points behind at the main break, however athletic forward Melissa Moyle took control in the second half, knocking down big shot after big shot on her way to a bombastic 27 points. Caitlin Hindle also came through with some big buckets, Georgia Stirton played an important role against Suns star Point Guard Julia Tan and young gun Julia Cowell stepped up in the absence of Centre Taylor Dickinson for a career high 15 rebounds. The Suns had a chance to tie it on the buzzer, however the long shot was off target, giving the Falcons their first win since March and the relief was evident in the playing group.
A number of players from Saturday Night’s epic backed up again the next day for the Youth Women at Ringwood. On the back of some veteran leadership, the Falcons did the job on the Hawks, with Eva Nikolitsis and Tahlia Higgs both having a big impact. The Youth Women are not out of the race despite a slow start to the season, and with the perfect mixture of experienced seniors and energetic juniors, the team could turn a few heads on the run home.
The Men hosted the Sherbrooke Suns in a Sunday Double Header at the Falcons Nest. The Youth Men kicked things off by demolishing the Suns by 48 points. The three point shot was money for the Falcons, with Abram Hothnyang was the master of the ceremony with 8 threes from just 15 attempts and Declan Harrick cleaning up any of the rare misses. It was never really a contest as the Falcons rolled on with everyone getting in the act.
The Championship Men wrapped up the weekend with a tough six point win over the Suns. Despite being light on for big men, the Falcons opened up a 20 point lead during the third quarter. Ivan Platenik and Daniel Dillon shouldered much of the work on the boards, while Brad Kelleher found his range with some nice outside shooting. The Suns made a run in the second half, however the Falcons regrouped and Simon Blennerhassett made clutch shots down the stretch to seal the win for the home team. The Falcons consolidated their spot in the top four with the win with just six rounds remaining before finals.
This Sunday sees a big time Championship Double Header at the Nest with the Falcons hosting the Bulleen Boomers. The Youth Women head to Templestowe on Saturday Night the take on the Boomers, while the Youth Men are at Hawthorn on Saturday Night.
