Falcons BigV Round Ten

It was a very tough weekend for the Falcons with all four teams going down to the Ringwood Hawks. The Senior Women came agonisingly close to snapping their losing streak against Bulleen however they couldn’t quite get over the line in the final few minutes.

The Men headed to Maroondah on Saturday Night to meet the Hawks, arch rivals since the 2010 Finals Series. The Youth Men suffered what some regarded as an upset loss to a Hawks side which is very much around finals contention. Despite having five players in double figures, the Falcons struggled from the field in the second half, which the Hawks took full advantage of to set up a match winning lead.
The Senior Men also went down to the Hawks on Saturday Night, despite another big time performance from Ivan Platenik, who finished with 25 points. The Hawks have now assembled their full roster and are looking to make a run the finals, while the Falcons will continue to work and build on their impressive mid-season run and consolidate their spot in the top four in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile at Templestowe and Saturday Night the Falcons Senior Women took on the Bulleen Boomers in a game which went back and forth the entire night. With both teams right in the contest in the final minutes, the Falcons couldn’t quite finish the game off, falling short once again, however continuing to show they are competitive on a weekly basis in this league. Claire Landby was a standout for the Falcons with 15 points.
The Youth Women opened the Sunday women’s double at home and things didn’t look too good early. The Falcons bounced back however on the back of some energetic play off the bench. With senior players Tahlia Higgs and Claire Landby steadying the ship through the middle quarters, along with the career best night of the bench for young guard Maria Nomikoudis, the Falcons remained in the contest through to the final quarter, when the Hawks began to use their physicality to their advantage. The result shows the young Falcons have improved greatly since their Round One matchup with the Hawks.
The Senior Women stepped on court to reverse their fortunes from the night before and it was a spirirted effort in the first half that saw the Falcons jump to a six point half time lead. The well dried up in the third quarter however with the Falcons managing just two points. This created a deficit which was too big to real in and the Hawks went on to record a 15 point victory.
The Falcons take on the Eltham Wildcats next weekend, with the Men playing an away Double Header on Saturday Night while both Womens teams host the Wildcats at the Falcon Nest on Sunday.
