The Falcons men took the growl out of the Tigers on Sunday and in doing so continued their impressive run up the State Championship Men table. Despite going neck and neck in the first quarter with the young Melbourne side, the Falcons pulled away to a 28 point win on the back of another massive game from Ivan Platenik, and a raft of supporting contributors.
It was a good weekend for the Falcons Men as the Youth Men jumped all over Whittlesea in the second half on Saturday Night. It was again a solid team performance right down the sheet, with Michael Harper and Declan Harrick both enjoying the fruits of some extended shooting work duing the week. The Youth Men now find themselves in second place on the ladder and really troubling teams with their explosive offense.
The Women continued to show positive signs, despite still waiting to build on their opening round win. The Melbourne Tigers smashed the Falcons last time these teams met, but it was a different story on Sunday with the Falcons keeping pace with the Tigers right through the game. It looked a few times as though the Falcons were staring at another big loss, but they continued to respond strongly, before eventually succumbing by 12 points. Melissa Moyle continued her fantastic form with 22 points, and is surely putting her hand up for a Player of the Month consideration.
The Youth Women took on the Tigers on Saturday Night, determined not to let another combustion happen after the Tigers dealt them a 30 point loss earlier this season. The game was in the balance throughout, and the Falcons made a big offensive move in the final quarter. They fell just short in the end, however shaved over 20 points off the margin from the last meeting. Tahlia Higgs led from the front with a fantastic game, with young guns Julia Cowell and Abbey Lloyd providing good minutes as well.
All four Falcons teams face the Ringwood Hawks next week, the Men play an away double header on Saturday, while both Women’s teams will be at home on Sunday. The Senior Women also travel to Bulleen on Saturday Night in what is a pretty tough double header weekend.
