Falcons BigV Round Eight

It was all Hume, but it wasn’t all gloom for the State Championship Women on Saturday Night. The Falcons produced their best effort since their Round One win against the Broncos at the Falcon Nest, giving the hottest team in the league a good old fashioned creepy clown costume scare, going down by a single point after a last second shot just rimmed out. Perth native Melissa Moyle was simply sensational for the Falcons, dropping 31 points while displaying plenty of range with her jump shot. Taylor Dickinson also battled hard in the paint, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds against Hume’s New Zealand National duo. The Falcons continue to impress against the top sides, and will look to ride that form to some wins in the coming weeks.

The Youth Women registered win number two on Saturday Night, holding off the Broncos to secure a four point victory. Claire Landby starred in the first part of the Saturday Night Double Dip, finishing with 19 points, including a near-perfect 16/17 from the foul line. The Falcons raced out of the blocks in this one, leading by 20 after one quarter and extending that lead at half time, however the Broncos made a run, a big run, a stampede perhaps. The Falcons regrouped however, and shouted ‘Jumanji’ with some big plays down the stretch, and just like that, the stampede was over and the Falcons had win number two for the season.
The Men went up the Tullamarine and past the airport on their way the Broadmeadows to meet the Broncos for an away double header. Despite their proximity to the airport, there was nothing terminal about the Youth Men’s performance. A 28-11 first quarter had the Falcons cleared for take-off, and Kuany Kuany needed no co-pilot on his way to a game high 22 points. The Championship Men capped off a successful double-header with a well-earned 11 point win over the Broncos, who many have tipped to be a serious Championship threat this season. Ivan Platenik and Bennie Lewis were again in the thick of it, with Tom Boyle and Kevin Benn also providing valuable production in the paint.
The Championship Men backed up on Sunday for a Mother’s Day meeting with the Sherbrooke Suns. The Falcons and Suns were hard to split early, however the Falcons began to pull away in the second quarter for a 10 point half time lead. The Suns rallied and were within four points in the final term before the Falcons flexed their muscles and ran to a 14 point win. Bennie Lewis top scored and had some monster dunks on the way, while Ivan Platenik was again superb to complete a great weekend for the duo.
The Championship Men and Women host the Melbourne Tigers in a big Double Header at the Falcon Nest on Sunday, while the Youth Men host the Whittlesea Pacers at the nest on Saturday Night. The Youth Women head to Oakleigh on Saturday Night for an away game against the Tigers.
