Saturday Night might be alright for Elton John, but it was not too kind to the Falcons this week as all four teams found themselves on the wrong end of the ledger against the Diamond Valley Eagles. The Youth Men however showed they’re alright for fighting with a swift turn around the next day against Whittlesea.
It was always going to be a tough assignment for the Falcons Youth Men as the Eagles have scarcely missed a beat on their way to a perfect record this season. The Falcons fell behind early and although Abram Hothnyang and Michael Dow found some range on their shot, the Eagles ran out 39 point winners.
It would have been easy for the boys to drop their heads after Saturday Night’s game, but they bounced back with force against the Pacers on Sunday. Abram Hothnyang went berserk from beyond the arc, hitting nine threes on his way to a career high 29 points, and the Falcons had one of the most dominant opening quarters in Big V history, going 15/24 from the field and dishing out 10 assists on their way to a ridiculous 34-5 quarter time lead. The Pacers shot just 2/30 for the quarter and the Falcons had 11 more rebounds by the first break. It was full steam ahead for the Falcons as they went on a 44 point win, an 83 point turn-around from the night before. Declan Harrick had his best game in a Falcons singlet with 16 points and 21 rebounds.
The Championship Men took some good form into their game against the Eagles on Saturday Night, however the Eagles proved a tough road block, as they held off the Falcons in a quality contest. After falling behind early, the Falcons kept fighting their way back into the contest but couldn’t quite get over the top of the Eagles, eventually going down by 11 points. Ivan Platenik shrugged off some early shooting woes to finish with 23 points and 12 rebounds with Bennie Lewis and Brad Kelleher also among the top scorers.
Across town the Falcons Women travelled to Greensborough to face the Eagles. The Youth Women got things started and had a tough time of it. The Falcons girls worked hard but were bitten by the turnover bug once again, coughing the ball up 37 times. The Eagles pushed the score out in the second half, registering a final margin of 40 points. Despite an unpalatable score line, young bigs Julia Cowell and Abbey Lloyd both had quality games in limited minutes.
The Championship Women had to contend with an Eagles team desperate for a win after a series of close losses. The shooting woes the Falcons experienced in the second half against McKinnon the week before appeared to haunt the girls, as they just couldn’t find their shot from outside. Defensively, the Falcons competed well, however the managed to connect on just one three point shot from 21 attempts for the game. Taylor Dickinson once again battled valiantly in the paint, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Falcons will be all over town next weekend, with the Championship Men heading back to Corio Bay for another battle with the Stingrays. The Championship Women head the Eltham for the second time this year, while the Youth League Men and Women face Geelong at home in a Sunday Double Header.
