Falcons Big V Round Four

You would half expect Sigrid Thornton and David Wenham to suit of for the Waverley State Youth Championship Women next week.

OK, a trip to Geelong hardly constitutes a ‘Sea Change’ however there must be something in the air down the highway because it took the Youth Women’s game to another level on Sunday. After copping a drubbing the night before from the Diamond Valley Eagles in a game where nobody from the Falcons could even manage double figures, the girls turned the tables on Sunday, upending Geelong in a surprise result.
It took a big team effort to get over the line, but it is hard to ignore Melanie Ioannidis going 8/12 from beyond the arc. The Falcons will be thrilled to notch their first win, especially as they cross Waverley Road this week to play Melbourne Tigers in a Grand Final rematch at Oakleigh this Sunday.
The Youth Men also headed down to Cat territory and made it a big day for the young Falcons with a convincing win. The boys are gaining some real momentum and have a real taste for sharing the wealth, this week it was Abram Hothnyang leading the scoring. The Youth Men are back at home this week to face the Hawthorn Magic.
Sunday saw the first Championship double header of the season at the Falcon Nest. The Championship Women took on title favourites the Melbourne Tigers and after an encouraging first half, copped a face full of Caitlin Cunningham in the second. The WNBL forward steamrolled the Falcons, however young Centre Taylor Dickinson fought valiantly to lead the way for the home team. The Falcons play host to the McKinnon Cougars this week in a match up that will no doubt gather plenty of attention with some former Falcons returning to the nest. Coach Elias Palioyiannis and the team will approach it like any other game, but it is hard to imagine there will be any shortage of emotion fuelling both teams in Sunday’s contest.
The Championship Men finished the weekend with a danger game against the Bulleen Boomers. Despite coming in to the contest without a win, the Boomers are the sort of team that can go off on any given day. The Falcons took care of business though, Ivan Platenik was his usual potent self, Brad Kelleher had a good game and Bennie Lewis continued to impress. The Men will head down to Corio Bay this week, to face the Stingrays who showed off their new import last week, in what will be an intriguing game.
