Falcons Big V Round One

The Falcons produced a mixed bag of results in round one of the 2012 Big V seeason, with all four teams facing traditional rivals Ringwood.

The Women got things started on Saturday Night at Maroondah with a Youth Women/Championship Women double header. The Youth team showed some good signs despite going down by 19 points. An early injury to starting forward Abbey Lloyd did not help, however some of the young Falcons juniors stepped up to fill the void. A high turnover count combined with some innacuracy from the field meant it would be tough to keep up with the Hawks in this one, but with the first game jitters out of the system now, there should be some positive results on the horizon for this young team.

The State Championship women took on the Hawks with the pressure of 'Game of the Week' billing. The Hawks boast two American imports and are in the discussion of championship favorites, however the run and gun Falcons took it right to the Hawks. With the game in the balance, the Falcons made big play after big play to record an impressive upset win. New recruit Melissa Moyle (pictured) led the show with 23 points, while Georgia Stirton and Taylor Dickinson also had outstanding games. The Falcons are emerging as a danger team in this competition, and will take on another championship favorite next week in the Eltham Wildcats.

The Men opened their season on their home court on Sunday, the Youth team meeting the reinging champion Hawks. With both teams undergoing some changes during the offseason, it was always going to be a coin flip game. The two teams ran side by side throughout the first half, however the Falcons gained the ascendency in the third and rolled on to a solid win behind some quality shooting from Sean Stewart and Michael Dow.

The Senior Men met the Hawks in a game that was missing no less than six big names. Despite the long list of absentees the game was as fierce as fans have come to expect from these two teams. Sedale Threatt Junior and Tom Boyle were the stand out performers for the Falcons who made a big run in the third quarter before falling just short by two points. With both teams expected to make deep playoff runs this season, you can expect some more tight contests in the 'Battle of the Birds' before the season is out.

The women are on the road again next weekend, with an away double header at Eltham on Saturday Night, while the men will be at home on Sunday with the Youth Men taking on Melbourne and the Championship Men battling Eltham in a rematch of last season's epic Grand Final series.
