Big V Pre-Season Tournament

Waverley had a whopping 5 teams compete at the Big V Pre-Season Tournament at MSAC on the Labour Day long weekend.

With just a week until tip-off for season 2012, Waverley made the most of the last minute hitout, with both State Championship Men and Women competing, as well as Youth Men, Youth Women and Youth Men Division 2.

The State Championship Women were the suprise packet of the weekend, qualifying for the Grand Final on the back of some impressive wins over Ringwood and Bulleen. Although they fell short in the Grand Final to Diamond Valley, the results are very encouraging for a young side keen to get off to a good start in 2012.

The State Championship Men played an exhibition game on Saturday Night, going down by two points in a nailbiter to Ringwood. A great preview to their Round One clash this week.

In an impressive showing of the depth of talent in the Youth Men squad this year, Waverley entered teams in both divisions of the Youth Men at the tournament. The State Youth Championship One Men has a convincing win over Ringwood, while going down narrowly the eventual Grand Finalists Melbourne and Diamond Valley. The Division 2 incarnation of the Youth Men went the distance, enjoying an undefeated weekend, bouncing Sunbury in the Grand Final by double figures.

The State Youth Championship women to a very young team into the tournament, and although immediate success was not on the menu, the group gained valuable experience against top level Big V and SEABL Youth programs, which will no doubt pay divadends down the line for the team, led by first year coach Stephanie Groom.

The Big V season tips off this weekend with a Sunday Men Double Header against Ringwood, Youth Men at 12:30pm, followed by the Championship Men at 2:30pm.
