The Under 12.1 Girls had a tough weekend batlting hard against some of the state's best teams in A Grade, however their results showed they are improving and will be ready for pool AA grading as they try and secure a spot in Victorian Championship. Team Manager Lana Angove shared some thoughts on the weekend with us.
The tournament started on Friday night with a tough match up against Altona. The girls were a little scratchy and hesitant after the holiday break. The holiday rust was evident in the amount of travel calls and the subdued nature of the Falcons’ offense; however they remained right in the game until the dying moments, when Altona managed to push the score out for a 21-12 win.
Saturday morning saw a vastly different Falcons outfit turn out to play McKinnon. The girls found renewed confidence, establishing a strong lead on the back of some smothering defence. The strong play was reflected on the scoreboard as the Falcons ran out strong winners 32-8.
The Falcons next opponent was the very tall Melbourne Tigers. Despite a strong team effort, the girls were not able to account for the Tigers’ superior height, going down 36-10.
The final game for the weekend saw the Falcons up against Knox, who would go on to win the Grand Final in convincing fashion the next day. It was a tough game for the Falcons, who began to show the effects of the heat and a mounting injury list. The Raiders proved too strong in this one, with a 57-12 victory.
Overall our team is new to playing together and is getting stronger each time we play. This was a great effort for their first tournament together.
Thanks to Trevor and Dave for their support and encouragement.
