SPECTATORS to the Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Sunday were treated to an absolute thriller as the match-up between top of the table Hume City and second-placed Waverley went right down to the wire.
With 14 lead changes and six tied situations throughout the match, this game was a prelude to finals basketball.
At each break, the two sides were separated by no more than five points as the players fought hard to increase their opposition’s deficit.
In the end it was the Broncos’ Lauren Bennett who was the difference for the home side, snagging a game-high 22 points, seven boards and three assists to help Hume City take the three-point win and claim some breathing space on the ladder.
Bennett was given good assistance from Naomi Pedro, who managed a respectable 14 points and gave off five assists, whilst the duo of Elyse Penaluna and Tenille Cann managed 12 points apiece.
For the visitors, it was Suzi Porter who showed class to hit 21 points, whist Kathleen MacLeod showed her presence with 14 points and nine assists.
Hume City coach Glen Milner said the win was a confidence booster for his side.
“Another close contest between two quality teams which went down to the wire,” Milner said.

Waverley Falcons 91 dft Bulleen Boomers 62
IT was a concerted team effort from second-placed Waverley which left Bulleen without a win for the season.
It was the Falcons’ ball from the jump and it was their high-intensity play which ensured this theme continued throughout the match.
The Falcons’ attack was led by Kathleen MacLeod (with a joint game-high 19 points at 62 per cent from the field and well as an unselfish seven assists).
MacLeod was offered solid support from Larissa Anderson, who a managed a respectable 17 points and eight boards whilst Julie Brookhouse hit a handy 14 points.
For Bulleen it was Caitlin Shadbolt who stepped up to produce a joint game-high 19 points, whilst Olivia Deiana showed her presence with 10 points.
