DONATIONS FOR YIYILI ABORIGINAL SCHOOL

Thank you to everyone who donated such a fantastic range of quality children's books for Yiyili's new library. The books will support a new Mums' and Bubs' Story Time and also general reading for the Reading Recovery graduates. In partnership with Scotch Junior School, ForChildren (Australia) Inc and Wesley College we have collected a cubic metre (18 storage boxes) of new and preloved books and literacy games, as well as basketballs and basketball uniforms donated by the Waverley Basketball Association and windcheaters for the cooler months. This precious cargo is now on its way to Perth by rail from where it will be trucked to Broome and delivered to tour operator, Kimberley Wild, whose staff have very kindly offered to transport it to Yiyili in the Kimberley.

A message from Yiyili teacher Kate Lamacraft, 7th June, in anticipation of the cargo:
'It sounds like you have collected an amazing donation once again - we do appreciate the support, thank you to everyone who has contributed. I am really looking forward to starting the Mums and Bubs story time, and will definitely send some pictures as soon as we have had our first session. That would be great if Kimberley Wild are happy to deliver the boxes periodically - and we could certainly pick some up when we are next in Broome - do you know when they might arrive? The basketball shirts and balls will be well used also - we will be having a staff vs students basketball match when the shirts arrive - so will certainly get some of our budding photographers to capture the shirts being used at the first event! We have not had any visiting coaches ... that sounds like it could be interesting to follow up. It is a very popular sport across all age groups and genders. The windcheaters will also be great - we do have cold mornings for the next couple of months, and a supply of jumpers for kids to wear for the first couple of hours at school will make them much more comfortable. We are all well and keeping busy up here, the kids are all doing well and making good progress and we have a very dedicated crew of teachers who work hard with the kids and enjoy each others' company - visitors comment that the school has a really good feel and a sense that there is lots of interesting things going on. Kind regards, and many thanks again, Kate
