Weekend Wrap - FINAL ROUND

 

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
Hume City 94 defeated Waverley 91
The Broncos have sealed up their spot in the 2010 Big V Call to Arms Finals Series with an upset victory over the Waverley Falcons. Sedale Threatt did his best and showed that he’s ready to perform when the finals roll in, putting in 24 points after playing limited minutes the last few rounds with a sore knee. Platenik had his usual double double of 14 points and 16 rebounds, but it was Broncos who were able to do the damage on the scoreboard. Maybank drilled in 24, Petridis had 25 and Sianidis helped out with 17. After being in dire straits a month or so ago, the Broncos have rallied and now look very dangerous as they stampede into the finals.
Waverley 82 defeated Eltham 67
The Falcons have recovered from a shock loss to the Broncos with a 15 point win over the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.
Ivan Platenik sewed up the scoring and rebounding titles for season 2010 with 20 points and 7 rebounds with Thomas Boyle going 18 points and 9 boards, but Mr consistent Kevin Benn was equally impressive with 14 and 12. The Falcons now look forward to a massive finals series against Diamond Valley while Eltham go back to the drawing board that is the 2011 off-season.    
 
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
Waverley 60 defeated Hume City 40
 A must min game for both teams to determine home court advantage for round one of the finals turned out to be a great confidence booster for the Falcons. Waverley led at every change and posted an impressive 8 steals in the first period. Carmen Weaver had a solid return from 17 minutes on the floor scoring 12 points along with 11 rebounds. The Broncos couldn’t handle the defensive pressure of Waverley and were forced into committing 29 turnovers leading to a convincing win for the Falcons. Now with these two teams facing off in finals it’s only a matter of time before we find out if Hume City can lift their game and make a run for the championship. 
Eltham 47 defeated by Waverley 76     
In Eltham’s last chance to win another game for the season they were out classed by a sharp looking Falcons team. Waverley led by 24 at half time and was in cruise control till the final whistle.Laura Thomas top scored for the Falcons with 19 points and 9 boards. She led all scorers on the court and also made her presence felt with two blocks. Zoe Carr posted another double-double in her final game of the season scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 boards. A contrasting display between a finals team and the bottom of the table Wildctas saw the deserved winner carry forward momentum into the first round of finals.
 
YOUTH LEAGUE 1 MEN
Hume City 74 defeated Waverley 72
After leading 20-9 in the first quarter, the Waverley Falcons blew their chances as the Broncos rallied to post a thrilling two point in on Saturday night. With Waverley locked into fourth spot with an up-coming series against Diamond Valley, they would have liked to be heading in with some steam, but it wasn’t to be. Andrew Musgrove had 17 points and 7 boards for the Broncos while Emmanuel Golong had 20 points with Dean Neville chiming in with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
 
YOUTH LEAGUE WOMEN
Waverley 90 defeated Hume City 48
The Falcons have sent a memo to the rest of the YLW competition as to why they should be considered title favourites with a crushing victory of Hume City. Extending their winning streak to 16, the Falcons never looked like losing behind Caitlin Hindle’s 21 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists while Linda Rizkallah piled in another 20. For the Broncos, Stacey Collins was very good with 14 points and 9 rebounds, but Waverley had weapons everywhere whilst spreading the minutes around.
