Weekend Wrap - Round 17

State Championship Men
Ringwood 102 defeated Waverley 92
The Ringwood Hawks have staved off a threatening Waverley Falcons outfit in a shootout at Maroondah in front of a very loud Ringwood contingency. Waverley started off extremely hot, knocking down 59% of their shots in the first half, namely behind Thomas Boyle who was only stopped by a slight injury, but would later return to make an impact. With the games momentum swinging back and forth, the Falcons rallied in the last quarter for a Corletto three pretty much iced the game. With Iva Platenik being restricted scoring wise, he impacted the game in other ways, posting 13 boards and 7 dimes, but the best Falcon was Kevin Benn off the bench, butchering the Hawks inside the paint.
But the Hawks had plenty of scorers, lead from the front by Luke McMillan who found himself wide open from the arc several times on his way to 25 points and 7 rebounds and Kevin Ratzsch was also very good with 17 points and 19 rebounds.

State Championship Women
Bullen 53 defeated by Waverley 75
A must win game for Bulleen to make finals has the makings of a great match. Bulleen’s intent was obvious from the outset but was out-classed by the flashy Falcons. Waverley led at every change and never looked in doubt shooting at 46% from the field. Laura Thomas was the main contributor for the Falcons with 15 points and 5 boards and was well supported by a solid performance from Fiona Richards with 11 and 9. Laura Jeffers was once again impressive for Bullen dropping a game high 17 points.
Waverley 69 defeated by Ringwood 70
The game of the round didn’t let us down and the streaking Ringwood Hawks got up by a point to the finals contending Falcons. This game was close from the outset as the lead changed hands several times throughout the first half but the best was saved for the last quarter. With the Hawks holding a 13 point lead heading into the last Waverley turned on their shooting and managed to drop 22 points in the final term only to come up one point short to the visiting Hawks. Melanie Fraser was the games top scorer with 15 points in the loosing team while Allison Dunkley-Smith put in 14 points for the Hawks shooting 805 from the three-point line

Youth League 1 Men
Sherbrooke 74 defeated by Waverley 91
Waverley’s finals dream has been re-ignited with an away win over Sherbrooke. This was the Falcons third straight win as they make a late charge for the top four as the Suns slumped to their sixth consecutive loss. Sherbrooke led at half time but a hot shooting second half by the Falcons secured the win. Waverley’s Jason Minerve led all scorers with 21 points with six triples whilst for the Suns Dale Rohrmann held his own with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Youth League Women
Waverley 73 defeated Altona 38
On a chilly night at the Swamp , the Youth League Lady Gators welcomed the Waverley Falcons to their last Home of the season. Points were hard to come by for both teams in the first half with Waverley (31) leading the Lady Gators (20).
The Falcons came out strong in the second half increasing their lead at each change and keeping the Lady Gators from scoring.  The Falcons ran away with the win 73 to the Lady Gators 38 with Claire Landby of the Falcons top scorer 16 points and Linda Rizkallah  taking out the double double with 10points and 10 rebounds, Sarah McKay the best of the Gators with 11 rebounds and 9 points.
Waverley 65 defeated Ringwood 42
The Falcons have continued to take the competition by putting away the Ringwood Hawks by 23 points at the Waverley Basketball Centre on Sunday afternoon. Shelley Mottin was an absolute revelation for the Hawks despite the loss, posting a huge 27 points and 10 rebounds in a team-carrying display.
But ultimately, Waverley just had too many players firing. 13 points from Caitlin Hindle and 11 from Taylor Dickinson were simply enough with every player on the roster managing to score.
