Basketball Crowned “King of all Sports in Victoria”

It’s official....Basketball is the new king of team sports in Victoria, according to the results of The Australian Sports Commission’s Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey. The survey showed more than 230,000 Victorians aged 15 and over participate in the sport of basketball, as opposed to Football’s (Australian Rules) 220,000.
Basketball Victoria CEO Wayne Bird attributes the growing popularity of the sport to the fact that it’s family orientated and can be played all year round, and anywhere from a basketball stadium to the ring above a garage door.
Bird also added that “The sport is truly international and offers pathways to world championships and Olympics for all athletes.”
While the survey only accounts for participants aged 15 and over, an official census of the sport undertaken by Basketball Australia highlights the fact that 36% of participants are under 15 years of age, further demonstrating just how popular the sport of basketball is.
An article highlighting the results of the survey featured in today’s Herald Sun.
