State Championship Women
Waverley 54 defeated Melbourne 49
A 3rd straight win to the Falcons have an injury plagued Waverley continuing to defy the pundits as they maintain 2nd position on the ladder following a big 5 point win over a Melbourne Tigers side also desperately seeking a spot in the top 4. Laura Thomas again showed why she was selected in the Big V All-Star game leading her side with an impressive 22-point and 10 boards haul. Elyse Penaluna with 15 points and 6 boards was the leading scorer for Melbourne. In what was an evenly contested game a 16-7 final period for the home side saw them run over the top of Melbourne coming away with the W.
State Championship Men
Waverley 91 defeated Melbourne 78
Waverley have inflicted a bit more pain on the Tigers’ weekend with a 13 point win on Sunday afternoon. Once again it was Waverley’s Ivan Platenik who was everywhere despite shooting only 50% from the charity stripe, but still recorded a lazy 27 points and 17 boards while Sedale Threatt initiated the offense with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
For Melbourne, Thomas Stephens had a big game with 21 points as Bennie Lewis and Yusuf Qaafow struggled to get past the Falcon’s brick wall defence which ultimately was the major factor in the win.
Youth League 1 Men
Geelong 74 defeated Waverley 69
Geelong capped off a brilliant weekend, returning to their home court at the Arena and coming away with a vital 5 point win against a highly rated Waverley Falcons team. One could have expected the Cats to be tired in their second game of a big double but solid shooting across the board helped them come away with a W against a Waverley side who put up 26 more shots than the home team. DKD aka Dexter Kernich-Drew added another impressive 30 point haul to his outstanding seasons stats shooting at 52% from the field. Unfortunately he did not have enough support from the rest of his team to get them over the line against a Cats side that all of a sudden is just outside the top 4.
