Washington State signs Dexter Kernich-Drew

Washington State signs Australian guard for next season

Australian Dexter Kernich-Drew signed a Financial Aid Agreement with Washington State University on Monday. He will join the men’s basketball team beginning with the 2010-11 season.

“We are excited about the addition of Dexter to our program,” WSU head coach Ken Bone said. “Along with the other signees, Dexter is a high character individual that is joining us this coming fall.  He’s a very skilled wing at this time and has a chance to really improve over the next few years as his body continues to develop.”

A 6-foot-6 , 180-pound guard, Kernich-Drew (pronounced Ker-nick) was the 2009 Men’s Youth 1 League Player of the Year as a member of the Waverly Eagles of Big V Basketball (formerly the Victorian Basketball League). He averaged 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game in 15 contests during the 2009 season.

“It’s been a dream of mine to play elite level college basketball since I was a little kid and now my dream’s becoming a reality,” Kernich-Drew said. “I’m just embracing it and taking it full head on. This is a great opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to playing basketball at Washington State.”

Kernich-Drew joins an incoming class that includes freshmen Patrick Simon (6-8, 205, F, Ephrata, Wash./Ephrata HS) and Andre Winston, Jr. (6-1, 160, G, Lakewood, Wash./Lakes HS) and junior college transfer Faisal Aden (6-4, 185, G, San Diego, Calif./Hillsborough CC).
