State Championship Men
Waverley 79 defeated Hume City 77
It was Platenik vs. Maybank in this one as both superstars went at it for the entire game, but it was Platenik’s Falcons that got over the line in the end in what was a thrilling game of ball.
The last quarter was a defensive arm-wrestle as both teams could only collectively muster 28 points in the fourth, but Waverley got the scores and stops they needed to take the game.
Jermaine Maybank was a star for the Broncos with 32 points, 14 coming from the stripe while Ivan Platenik carried the load with 26 points and 11 boards.
State Championship Women
Waverley 65 defeated Hume City 57
This may have been the 2009 grand final rematch, but both teams are sporting very different line-ups and very different win loss records coming into this game (Waverley 4-1, Hume City 3-2). Despite a low scoring first quarter, Hume City took a handy 10 point lead into the long break on the back of a FG% in excess of 50%. The home side picked up their game in the third to start the final quarter with a narrow 2 point advantage. A Tenille Cann 3 pointer mid way through the last pushed Hume out to a 3 point lead, which could have signalled the end for Waverley. To their credit, the experienced Waverley campaigners steadied and looked inside, putting up just a solitary 3 point attempt in the 4th and earning their victory from the line.
Youth League Men 1
Waverley 85 defeated Geelong 71
While the Kernich-Drew (26pts) and Wiasak (22pts) shootout went down, others were quietly picking up the points in supporting roles – Geelong’s Rebula (16pts, 7reb) and Headlam (10pts, 6reb) – Waverley’s Wayman (15pts, 10reb), Stewart (14pts). A high standard intense game that was closer than the final score indicates.
Youth League Women
Waverley 77 defeated Melbourne 39
We know Melbourne are young, like really young, but their inconsistency makes for a scouters nightmare. Especially when their starters are up playing in SCW. But isn’t that the beauty of this competition? The Tigers fought this one out right until the end, still crashing the boards hard and making Waverley work for their points. Falcons Hindle racked up some nice stats – 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, as did Melbourne’s Babic, who, at only 15, found 14 points and 9 boards of her own
