Big V Basketball has announced the Statistical Awards for Scoring Title, Rebounding Title and Golden Hands across all divisions, and there were some exciting winners to come out of season 2009.
The scoring title and rebounding title, given to the player or players with the highest averages who have played a minimum of 50 per cent of games, are two of the more popular awards. The Golden Hands award, which often causes some confusion, is given to the player with the highest number after calculating assists plus steals minus turnovers.
In Championship Men’s Division, Ringwood Hawks’ Luke McMillan has reaffirmed his place as the most prolific scorer in the Big V, leading all scorers with an average of 31.2, the highest average across all divisions. This is also his second straight title.
Latrobe City Energy’s tower in the paint, Glen Barlow, was the leading rebounder for SCM, pulling down 15.4 per game, while Darryl Corletto picked up his second straight Golden Hands award, with a score of 6.08.
Hume City’s dynamic duo were active at the top of the league-leaders this year in Championship Women’s division. Katrina Hibbert took out the scoring title with 20.5 ppg and Sharin Milner has won an incredible third straight Golden hands award, with a massive score of 6.71. The always active Candice Rogers from the Bulleen Boomers has taken out the rebounding award with an average of 11.4.
In Division 1 Men, there are no surprises as to who picked up the leading scorer’s award – Carl Arts’ 30.6 points an outing was well clear on top. La Trobe University’s Neville Chivhanganye backed up his D2M rebounding title from last year, to claim it again in Division 1 with a 15.6 board-per-game average, while Sherbrooke Suns guard David Black took out the Golden Hands award with 4.14.
It was a dead heat on the glass in Division 1 Women – Emmie O’Nial from Sunbury and Amanda Hederics from Mildura both picked up 11.1 rebounds a game this season which was good enough for best in the comp, while the Werribee Devils had a pair of winners this season: Steph Clark took out the scoring title with 15.4 ppg while Sharon Grieve has gone back-to-back in the Golden Hands category, collecting her second straight with a score of 4.00.
Division 2 saw the assault of the Bruces this season – little brother Shaun claimed the scoring title with 29.3 points a game and older brother Cameron took out the Golden Hands award with 5.82. But Melbourne University have been dominant this year, and it starts with their big-man, Thomas Bicknell, who cleaned up 17.1 rebounds a game this year which was best in the comp.
Katrina Vogelezang capped off a stellar season with Shepparton to claim this year’s scoring title in Division 2 Women. She averaged 17 points per game. Jennifer Cameron was dominant on the glass with an 11.1 rebounding average, while Louise McLean took out the Golden Hands award with 3.1.
Vladimir Tankov didn’t leave too many awards for the others this season, taking out the scoring title and the rebounding title in Division 3 Men for Keysborough. He averaged 23 ppg and 16.9 rebounds an outing. McKinnon’s ever-reliable Tom Burns claimed the Golden hands award with a score of 4.35.
La Trobe University fell short of a finals campaign in Division 3 Women, but two of their league-leaders were anything but short on the stat-sheet. Erin McCutcheon picked up a rebounding title, averaging 15.7 boards per game. Nikki Calvert took out the Golden Hands award with a score of 3.65. But it was Keira Beswick of Western Port who has been the dominant scorer all season – she filled up the bucket with an average of 18.8 per game.
Dexter Kernich-Drew from the Waverley Falcons was Youth League Men 1’s big scorer with a season average of 23.9. He had some stiff competition, so it was a great achievement.
Simon Bradbury from Diamond Valley pulled down 13.8 boards which was good enough for the rebounding title, while Eltham’s dime-dropping playmaker, Glenn Piper, took out a very worthy Golden Hands award with a score of 4.90.
Carly Simon’s double-double average this year was impressive enough, but both these stats also happened to be at top of the league in Youth League Women. She averaged 15.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. Tanja Stevanovic took out the Golden Hands award with a score of 3.65.
Leading Scorer in Youth League Men 2 was Geelong Cat, Steven Wiasak, whose 20.4 helped his team to a finals finish. He also finished equal first on the glass too, sharing the title and a 13.1 average with Alex Bogart-King from Sunbury Jets. Coburg’s tower in the middle, Mweemba Maluma, proved he had slick hands as well, picking up Golden Hands honours with a score of 4.55.
Congratulations to all winners. Winners will receive their awards at the Annual Big V Dinner, to be conducted at Moonee Valley Racecourse on 12 September 2009.
