Melbourne Tigers 104 lost to Waverley Falcons 109

It was a relieved Waverley outfit which earned themselves a much-needed win against Melbourne on Sunday. After an epic encounter on Saturday night, Melbourne back-up to face a determined Waverley outfit. The home-side led for more than 36 minutes of game-time, but it was the Falcons who managed to hold the margin when it counted.

Melbourne coach Al Westover said his side got the jump on Waverley early but lost their way as the Falcons hustled and scrapped their way back into the game. “At the end, they made the plays – we didn’t,” Westover said. “It’s a game of skill and will, but the will always has to be greater than the skill – it was for them, but not for us.”

Waverley’s victory was thanks largely to Ivan Platenik who was stellar - collecting 44 points (including 14-from-20 from the free-throw) and 19 rebounds.
He was aided by Curtis Small, who found form to hit five three-pointers on his way to 26 points. James Orr contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds, whilst Dane Steinke showed his presence with 10 points.

For the Tigers, it was Adrien Sturt who backed up his Saturday night effort to collect 32 points at 70 per cent from the field and 15 rebounds. Ryan Bathie was impressive with 19 points and six rebounds with Daniel Johnson managing 17 points and nine rebounds and Daryl Corletto snagging 15 points and seven assists.
