Falcons fly-high to scalp Broncos

Waverley Falcons 65 dft Hume City Broncos 57

In the biggest upset of the round, Waverley showed their supremacy over the previously unbeaten Hume City Broncos, to collect a seven point win.

It was the Falcons who controlled the floor from the jump, with only three lead changes throughout the match.

Despite last round’s Player of the Week Katrina Hibbert hitting a dapper 29 points and pulling in 12 boards for the visitors, it was all Waverley’s games.

Hume City assistant coach Marc Alabakov said his side was on the back-foot from the onset, lacking assertiveness.

“In heavyweight slugfests, you can’t win the fight by sitting on your back foot and being evasive,” Alabakov said.

“Waverley caught fire, connected from the range and maintained enough of a cushion to win.”

Sharin Milner was the other stand-out performer for the Broncos, the veteran collecting 14 points.

For the Falcons it was Alex Lough who steered the ship with 17 points and nine boards.

Julie Brookhouse showed her presence with 14 points, Melanie Fraser 11 points and Tess Ferry with eight points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

Waverley coach March Chivers had just one thing to say.

“Defence wins games,” Chivers said.

Game MVP: Katrina Hibbert (Hume City) – 29 points, 12 rebounds
