It took until the very last second, but the Waverley Falcons State Championship Men did enough to outlast McKinnon in their elimination final on Sunday.
With scores locked on the final playphase of the game, a quick rebound-outlet led to a layup as time expired, giving the Falcons the win by just two points.
It was close the whole way, with the Falcons led by athletic big man Desmond Simmons.
The win propels the Falcons into the semi-finals, where they will take on the Knox Raiders in a best-of-three. The Raiders had the better of the Falcons during the regular season, but their last matchup also went down to the last play. It promises to be a nailbiting series, which may hinge on whether national squad big man Matt Hodgson is available for the Raiders.
The Falcons Women enjoyed a week off on account of their top-two finish, and they will be back in action this week. They'll take on the Buleen Boomers, who have had a very strong second half of the season. The Women's semi-finals is also best-of-three.
What these best-of-three series mean is that we'll have big time finals basketball on here at the Falcons Nest for each of the next two weeks. The Men will be at home this week, while the Women will be at home next week. Be sure to check when the games are because if last week is anything to go by, you won't want to miss a single second of this season's finals series.
