Another chapter in one of the Big V's most intense rivalries looks set to be written as the Waverley Falcons and Ringwood Hawks square off for a spot in the Big V Championship Men's Grand Final.
Bound over the years by location and circumstance, the modern version of this rivalry gained life through the 2010 Grand Final and has built from each year to the next. While the Falcons got the better of the initial bout, it has actually been the Hawks putting and end to the Falcons finals campaigns in the more recent battles.
This time around it is going to be settled over a three game series, with Game One this Saturday Night at Ringwood.
The Falcons had the better of the matchups during the season, however Ringwood showed the league that they are ready to lift another gear in this year's finals, dispatching McKinnon by 26 points.
Both teams are simply loaded with offensive talent and boast plenty of depth. The Falcons are led by NBL Centre Matt Hodgson, newly signed Perth Wildcat Dexter Kernich-Drew and Big V legend Ivan Platenik; while the Hawks get great production out of forward Matt Fennell and American duo Logan Lyle and Nate Champion.
The reality is though that both these teams go deep and any number of quality players can step up on the night and deliver game breaking performances. This is what makes this series so intriguing.
Things get started this Saturday, August 13, 8pm at Ringwood. The series then moves to the Falcon Nest next weekend for games 2 and 3.
Meanwhile the Falcons Women bowed out of the 2016 finals series, falling to a very good Southern Peninsula outfit in Rosebud on Saturday Night. Tegan Cunningham put in a virtuoso performance and some of the other Falcons stars got on board but it wasn't enough to stop the Sharks.
It puts an end to a good season where the Falcons put on a strong second half run to qualify for finals, and the focus will slowly shift to preparing for the 2017 campaign.
