Now that the Falcons Big V 2015 campaign has run its course, this week we'll be having a look at how our teams fared in season 2015. The State Championship Men went within a whisker of a Grand Final spot, let's check their season out.
After a promising pre-season, the Falcons burst out the blocks in 2015 under Coach Andy Sherwell with an opening weekend Double Header that resulted in the Falcons winning both games by a combined 49 points.
The good times didn't last too long however, as the Falcons dropped the next three games, and went into a Sunday afternoon game against undefeated Ringwood facing the real prospect of falling to 2-4 on the season.
That game proved to be a line-in-the-sand moment for the Falcons, who despite missing their two starting guards led from start to finish to inlfict the Hawks' first loss. The win laid the foundations for a ten game winning streak that took them from down near the bottom of the ladder, to right near the top.
By the time the streak came to an end, against Ringwood, the same team against whom the streak started, there was no doubt that the Falcons would be contesting finals once again. The ony question was would they do enough to steal a spot in the top two?
Despite winning their remaining eight games (meaning they had won 18 of their last 19 games), the Falcons missed the top two due to the head-to-head differential with Corio Bay. A heartstopping game ending with a Brad Kelleher buzzer beating three gave the Falcons a win over Corio Bay in the last round, but they didn't win by enough to cover the point spread. The Falcons would need to play an elimination final in the first week against Bulleen.
After winning both encounters against the Boomers during the season, the Falcons did what was expected in week one, dispatching Bulleen by 25 points. All that stood between the Falcons and a spot in the Big Dance was a return bout against Corio Bay down at Geelong. In a game that was back and forth throughout, the Falcons fell just short at the end, going down by three points.
In another strong season from the Falcons Championship Men, the big names continually dialled in big numbers. Scoring and rebounding machine since forever Ivan Platenik was up to his usual tricks, finishing with averages of 20.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. While consistency is pretty much his thing, Ivan produced especially big games in thier surprise win over Ringwood, with 29 points and 16 rebounds; and in their win over Hume City when he dropped a cool 35 points on 15/23 shooting.
Waverley's own 'BK' Brad Kelleher did his own Bernard King impression against Eltham when he simply took over the game in the fourth quarter. In a closer than would have been expected contest, Brad put the game away faster than a New York minute to finish with 27 points. Brad's averages of 16.2 points and 4.6 asissts put him again amongst the elite guards in the competition.
Big man Chris Cameron returned to the Falcon Nest where he played in 2008, to achor the middle and deliver some big games along the way. CC had 25 points and 13 rebounds against Diamond Valley, and a couple of weeks later gave a certain Hawthorn Magic player nightmares when he torched him for 31 points and 12 rebounds.
The other usual suspects were again good for the Falcons. Sharpshooter Chris Arkell was knocking down shots regularly, hitting four 3 pointers in a game six times. Evergreen Point Guard Sedale Threatt was always classy, filling up all sorts of columns on the stats sheet and knocking on the door of a triple-double on a few occasions.
The Falcons are a constant force in this league, and will look to shape up again in 2016 and try and make the final step into Grand Final action.
